***The following is a legend for the local systems and measurements commonly referred to in the True Realm. While it is a fair amount of information to take in, only a handful of terms will ever be used in any given situation and always with context, as to help the reader along toward understanding the jargon. In this regard, the following legend is not meant as mandatory reading toward better understanding but rather it is supplementary and just for reference. In other words, don’t feel obliged to know of all these names. I will probably forget many of them in time, just as you, since I won’t be using all of them all of the time!***

LEGEND

Dates

-1 year = 14 seasons

-1 season = 28 days

Seasons

Seasons on Rynn are based around spirituality, not the weather. Seasons are named for the Kaldasian system of diety worship, each season the name of the spirit worshipped. The Kaldans—the oldest recorded civilization—held true that the Creator, when burdened with the overwhelming task of building the world, sighed fourteen times, and from each breath came the Taryin—“ones of great tasks”. Each Taryin was assigned a specific duty to accomplish and oversee. There are fourteen Taryin in all (one for every season), and they are as follows:

Murdia – Ruler of water

Kallon – Ruler of earth

Trimas – Ruler of air

Vevorgy – Ruler of fire

Incros – Ruler of time

Astalam – Ruler of sound

Prundu – Ruler of smells

N’nvorziak – Ruler of sight

Bandell – Ruler of touch

Ojot – Ruler of tastes

Sarelo – Ruler of souls/spirit

Hunchas – Ruler of emotion

Vamphet – Ruler of knowledge

Zyxian – Ruler of the afterlife/death

Distance/Area

Tear (“Tare”) = hundredthpinch = width of a small tear in a page of papyrus

Pinch = tenthhand = average width of a finger (pinched between two)

Hand = quarterstride = average palm width

Blade= average sword blade length (about 3 feet)

Stride = shoulder width = average step length

Bout = fifty-stride = average city block

Leave = twenty-five bouts = close to a mile

Kaldar = 100 leave

Ovit = approx. the area of a finger tip

Square-blade = an area one blade by one blade

Ample = about an acre

Blear (or bi-ample) = about a hectare

Weight

Grain = Weight of one grain of sand from the Half-moon Beach in Voswun

Bunch = Weight of an average handful of grains = about the weight of a large apple = about one pound

Ample = Also called an ample-bunch, approx. 2 handfuls of grains = about 1 kilogram

Tuller = quarter-cask = twenty-five bunches

Cask  or Carboy (depending on location) = Techatuller = roughly one-hundred pounds

Ingon = ten-cask/ ten-carboy = roughly a metric ton (1000 kg)

Volume

Drab = 1/100th quich

Quich = approximately a thimble full of liquid

Maker = about a ½ liter, approx.  500 quich (comes from the saying “meet your maker” which was used by the dwarves when they served a ‘maker’ of ale)

Leric = approximately a bathtub full of liquid, approx. 150 makers

Strade = 1000 leric, approx. 7.5 kL (average volume of a vat)

Aquith = 50 strade, approx. 4 ML (average water tower)

Money (Credits)

Pargrav (1/10 grav)

Grav (1 full credit)

Atla (1000 grav)

Metin (1000 Atla)

Energetics

Energy (generic) = hets

Force (generic) =  Sheqs

Amount of substance = Gog = 1.0 x 10^25 atoms = approx. number of atoms in a blade of iron (of weight 1 ample).

Temperature = melds (1 meld = 25 degrees Celsius, absolute zero = 0 meld. So room temperature (25 degrees Celsius) = approx. 12 meld (11.92 to be exact)).

Frequency (waves) = shyrads

Pressure = crushels

Density = Usu. grain/quich for small/less dense objects; cask/maker for larger/more dense objects,

Charge = Querel. microquerel, megaquerel etc.

Current = kors

Radiation = egarts. 1000 egarts = 1 rad = lethal dose for most cren

Resistance = tinns

Electrical Potential = vods

Capacitance = stors

Conductance = trads

Inductance = imms

Power = prevs

Magnetic Flux = thrize

Luminosity = brayts

Velocity/Speed = strides/second (slow objects), kaldar moment = 1000 kaldar (10^6 leave) per minute (very fast objects)
